On Wednesday, we went to Smolak Farm! Room #7 had a blast enjoying the hayride, picking pumpkins, and eating a delicious apple cider donut snack. Then, on Thursday the boys and girls transformed themselves into artists and scientists as they observed and drew their pumpkins as they saw them, then measured how many cubes tall their pumpkins are! It was fun to see the differences and similarities between them! Thank you to the adults who chaperoned! It was a fabulous day!
Math Stations:
- Pumpkin Seed Counting – Similar to last week’s mini ten frame book, students used star stickers to represent each number in their book. Then they received practice tracing each number!
- Shape Puzzles - Using various paper puzzle pieces, the children counted how many Unifex cubes could fit on each. They then “labeled” each shape with the corresponding number! Great job practicing your counting skills, Kindergarteners!
- Dot Bingo – At this station, students rolled a die to determine what number to focus on. Next, they put a marker on a representation of that number (e.g., picture of fingers, the numeral, the dots, OR what it looks like on a ten frame)! In this manner, the cherubs were able to notice that one can represent numbers in a variety of ways! First one with five in a row won!
- Sorting Colors – The children picked a tub containing differing amounts of colored squares. They sorted the squares by color, counted how many of each there were, then recorded their answers on their recording sheets.
- Build a Staircase –This week, this fan favorite got a bit trickier! Instead of working with dot dice, the boys and girls used number dice. In this manner, they practiced their number recognition. Working with a partner, the boys and girls of Room #7 took turns rolling a die. They then stacked cubes together to represent that number. Once the partners finished building their staircases (1-6), they took turns rolling the die to disassemble them!!
Wowza! Read to Self is going so well! The boys and girls have been concentrating on building their stamina, and they are up to 7 whole minutes of reading the words, reading the pictures, and retelling their stories without stopping! What impressive work! As part of our Reader’s Workshop work, a new “center” will be introduced soon: Read to Someone! Stay tuned to hear more when the time arrives!
In Writing, the students are working on visualizing, or picturing, what they want their stories to be about so that they don’t give up when it gets too tricky! We talked about doing the best they can! Room #7 did an excellent job closing their eyes before and during writing to really see what they wanted to draw!
For the last two weeks, the Room #7 boys and girls have been chatting about what it means to be flexible! We coined a new term in our class, “going with the flow!” Have the cherubs show you the sign :) ! With Mrs. Grubbs’s help, everyone discovered that they have a superflexible person within them all named, Superflex! In Superflex on Friday, an Unthinkable was introduced….Rock Brain! Dun, dun, dunnn! When Rock Brain invades a brain, one gets stuck and is unable to be flexible. Mrs. Grubbs taught the flexible cherubs some useful strategies to help defeat this sneaky Unthinkable. Ask your kiddos what they are! Check out the Social Skills Tab on the Website to find out more!
Enjoy your weekends!
