Lively Letters
Lively Letters is a program that helps children develop phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the skill of letter sound association. Each letter is depicted as a colorful character and a brief story is told about each letter. This helps the children to remember the letter sounds. We will use Lively Letters to learn our vowels!
The vowels are Super Stars, because if you didn't have vowels, you couldn't make any words!

Our first Super Star vowel is A - Andy Apple. Open your mouth wide to take a huge bite while we start to say "apple."
"AAAAA" - That's the sound apple makes! The mouth on Andy Apple is wide too!
Hand cue (helps kiddos remember the sound) -
Pretend to hold an apple, getting ready to bite it with a wide open mouth.

Our second Super Star vowel is E - Ed. He is a video game character who likes to go along, eating up all the candy eggs while he makes this sound, "e-e-e." When Ed's mother calls him for dinner, she wags her finger (a 'come here' movement with your forefinger) and calls his name, "E-." Before she finishes saying his name, Ed is there because he is just so quick! The mouth for Ed is really small - only one finger should fit in your mouth!
We learned two hand cues to help remember the "e" sound -
1) Make the 'come here' movement as if you are calling Ed for dinner and say the "e"
sound.
2) Make an exaggerate "e" sound and put your fingers near your mouth to feel how little it
open!

Our third Super Star Vowel is I - the basketball player. I is a very famous basketball player who believes that when he puts a smile on his face, he can get the ball into the basket. Imagine: it's the middle of the big game, and the score is tied. If I gets this basket in, his team will win the game! The crowd goes wild! They all stand up with huge smiles on their faces, and they all do the same cheer, "Get it i - i - in!"
Again, we learned two hand cues to help remember the "i" sound:
1) With your index finger pointing down, thrust downward each time you say the "i" sound in the
cheer: "Get it i-i-in!"
2) Again, with your index finger, start to scratch your nose. Say the word "i - i - itchy!"

Our fourth Super Star Vowel is O - super cute baby! When people see that cute, little, round baby face they say, "o - o - awww!"
Here are two cues to help remember the "o" sound:
1) Tilt your head to the side when saying the "o - o - awww" sound.
2) When you say this sound, notice how your mouth is like an O!

Our final Super Star Vowel is U - The toddler! The toddler is in her crib and she wants to get up. She keeps saying that she wants to get "u - u - u - up!"
Hand cues:
Put both arms up so that your arms and body make the letter u!
