Although it has been a week with some sudden transitions, the students rose to the challenge and were amazing! We were able to spend time at morning meeting on Wednesday discussing the change in teacher, but reassuring them that Mrs. Quinn is doing well. I reminded them that she, too, needs to be a "first time listener" and stay home and rest:) I was also able to share my excitement as their new teacher until the Spring, and answer any questions they had. They are all so caring and kind, and willing to help me when I need it.
Mrs. Quinn even popped in to say goodbye and told them she would visit again after the New Year.
Here's a recap our four day week:
Alphafriends:
We learned about Fifi Fish (F) and Larry the Lion (L)this week.
VIP
Students learned about being a VIP and all the fun things involved when it's their turn. Mrs. Quinn was our VIP example Monday and Tuesday. It was a lot of fun.
Reader's Workshop
Students created their crowns and illustrated pictures of their favorite storybook and non-fiction book.
They then participated in a parade throughout the school. They proudly carried their books and wore their crowns for all to see.
Students continued to read to themselves and partners from their book baskets throughout the week.
Writer's workshop
Students learned about Show and Tell in writing. They learned that they are growing as writers, and they need to add more to their writing daily.
The were reminded to look at their special objects they brought from home, think about its details, then write about it. They then shared their objects and writing with their table-mates.
Science
Some students were intrigued by new peacock feathers in our science station. They sketched them, felt them and waved them around.
Social Studies
We learned about the importance of Veteran's Day and why we have no school Monday. We looked and listened to a read to me story on the ELMO. https://www.getepic.com/app/read/18064
Math Stations
We repeated some favorites (Fill the Cup and Grow and Shrink Teens) and added some new ones:
Tic-Tac-Teen: Partner game that uses 10 frame cards and dots that make up teen numbers. Students add them, then locate the numeral on the board. 5 in a row wins!
One More Bingo: Partner game where students roll a dice (we introduced our big sponge-like ones that they loved) and add one more to the number on the dice, then find that number on the game board.
Teens on the Ten Frame: a booklet they fill-in to practice counting and number recognition and formation.
