The boys and girls of Kindergarten continue to complete 100th Day stations as well as some additional ones!
- Towers, Towers, Towers – This activity provides an opportunity for the children to see number relationships while they practice counting. Given prepared towers, students figured out how many cubes were in each tower by using invisible buddy lines and the knowledge they already have. For example, if they knew that one tower had ten cubes in it, they could then figure out that the other one that had one less cube had a total of nine! Room #7 is full of math detectives!
- Addition Crossout – With a partner, a cherub rolled two dice. He/she then added those two dice together (counting on!) and crossed out that particular number on his/her sheet. The partners went back and forth until all the numbers were crossed out. The partner who crossed out the final number won!
- 100’s Chart - At this center, the kids filled in the missing numbers. Lots of good conversations took place while they were hard at work because many noticed patterns that occurred within their number grids!
- 100th Day Puzzles – Independently, students put together cut apart 100 grids using their number sense knowledge. This was tricky, but they persevered!
- 100th Day Partner Game – At this partner games, one student closed his/her eyes as the partner covered up 5 or 6 numbers on the 100 grid. Next, the first partner had to use his/her number knowledge to discover the hidden numbers. Then, they switched! This was super fun J!
- Domino Addition – At this center, the boys and girls picked various dominos. They then recorded what their domino looked like and transferred those dots into a number sentence. This was great subitizing, counting on, and addition practice!
- iPad – Park Math – Addition! – For this game, the students practiced their addition skills by adding two groups of ducks together!
Room #7 began a new unit in Writer’s Workshop this week! The kiddos became the teachers (and writers) as they learned about informational how-to texts. To begin the unit, I showed an exemplar story to the writers in our room on the topic of building a snowman. After reading it, the kiddos identified a variety of aspects included in the writing: tips, warnings, lots of details, labeled pictures, hooks, or getting the reader excited, and arrows.
Next, the class brainstormed a list of all the things they know how to do. The cherubs did a magnificent job coming up with a variety of topics! Last, they dove right in and started their own how-to stories. It was amazing to see how much excitement and eagerness the kids displayed, and they were totally motivated to start writing! They wanted to show all their expertise! Over the upcoming weeks, they will be immersed in a variety of mentor texts, and our list of what to incorporate in our books will continue to grow! How fun!
Room #7 is full of resilient learners! Last Friday, we read The Dot, by Peter Reynolds, an excellent, cute story with a profound message: instead of giving up, bounce back, and try again! The kiddos came up with an abundance of great self-talk to use when they are feeling defeated like, “Try and try. If something defeats you, don’t give up!” “Break down your fear. Stop and try again.” “If something defeats you, bounce back and try again!” Awesome mindset, boys and girls!
Keep those 100th Day vests coming! I would be happy to store them in the classroom until Tuesday, February 7th! In addition, please encourage your children to bring in 5 cans of tuna! Lastly, don’t forget about those decorated Valentine’s Day boxes! We are celebrating this loving holiday on Tuesday, February 14th! Thank you so much for all of your support!
Have a wonderful and restful weekend.
