Tuesday: We were welcomed back from the long weekend to an instrumental concert by the fourth and fifth graders. Room 7 really enjoyed the performance.
Circle Word "no"
Students began another rotation of new jobs.
Writer's Workshop:
Students continue to write narrative stories. They are focussing on an editing checklist and making corrections if...
- There aren’t any spaces.
- They didn’t stretch words out enough.
- The letters are all smushed together.
- There aren’t enough words or labels
- There aren't speech bubbles.
Reader's Workshop:
Bigger books, bigger muscles-
Students are challenging themselves with new words and more words on a page. They are using their super powers to help when they get stuck as well.
- Pointer Power!
- Sound Power!
- Reread Power!
- Partner Power!
- Picture Power!
- Snap Word Power! (reading circle words in a snap)
- Persistence Power! (or perseverance)
Super Reader Parade in School Friday:
All three kindergarten classes had a parade in the school to show off their super reading powers! Students wore their capes, masks, and carried 2 of their favorite books. They then met in the cafeteria and shared their books with a partner from another class. It was very exciting and the kiddos were super proud of their accomplishments! They took their capes and masks home to keep as well.
Social Studies: We are learning about our community and important jobs/roles people have. Students also learned about responsibilities and listed some of their own at school and at home.
Math:
We will be focussing on 100 day activities and games these next few weeks. Our 100th day is Feb 7th (if we don't have any snow days).
This week we introduced the following stations:
Bump! – An addition partner game! Working with a friend, each student took 10 cubes of the same color (e.g.: Player 1 = green, Player 2 = blue). Next, Player 1 rolled the two dice and added them together. That player then put a cube on the circle with the matching sum. The game continued in this manner; however, if someone achieved a sum that was already marked, that player could “bump” the cube off the game board. Players could also “freeze” a number by rolling the same sum twice.
Missing numbers to 100- fill in the grid
Color code 100 objects in a picture and categorize
Caterpillar Shoes: Write numbers 1-50 and add 2 shoes per number on the caterpillar to equal 100
Subitize tree on the Ipad
SPLAT- whole class math game where students subitize ojbects then quickly figure out how many are hidden. They loved this game and the more we played the quicker they were able to answer.
We also counted how many times we could say the alphabet in 100 seconds (6 times) and how many times we could jump up and down in 100 seconds (90 times).
On Friday, Mark's parents and Louis' mom joined us to share about The Lunar New Year that is a part of the Chinese culture. Students watched a video, listened to a story, made a craft and learned about traditional costumes and ways it is celebrated. They were each given a paper lantern as well.
Enjoy the weekend.
