It has been a wacky couple of weeks at school with the snow days, but the kiddos have been super flexible and continue to love our days in Room #7! I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing break, whether you are traveling or enjoying a “stay-cation”! Here are a few highlights from the week!
The boys and girls of Kindergarten continue to complete 100th Day stations as well as centers with a Valentine’s Day theme!
- Valentine’s Day Addition – Using a die, students rolled two numbers and added them together on two broken hearts to make one complete heart! For an extra challenge, students did the work a second time but used two dice to make more difficult number sentences!
- Magic Picture – At this station, the boys and girls had to follow instructions carefully and utilize designated colors for specific numbers when coloring their picture! A Valentine’s Day surprise was revealed after they finished their coloring!
- Towers, Towers, Towers – This activity provides an opportunity for the children to see number relationships while they practice counting. Given prepared towers, students figured out how many cubes were in each tower by using invisible buddy lines and the knowledge they already have. For example, if they knew that one tower had ten cubes in it, they could then figure out that the other one that had one less cube had a total of nine! Room #7 is full of math detectives!
- Addition Crossout – With a partner, a cherub rolled two dice. He/she then added those two dice together (counting on!) and crossed out that particular number on their sheet. The partners went back and forth until all the numbers were crossed out. The partner who crossed out the final number won!
- Rolling Right Along – Students rolled their dice to see how many numbered boxes to color in. Every time they rolled, they changed the color crayon they used. In this manner, when they were finished, Room #7’s mathematicians were able to discern how many rolls it took to reach 100! They loved when they finally did!
- iPad – a new game: subtraction! - At this new iPad game, students worked to finish subtraction number sentences!
- 100’s Chart - At this center, the kids filled in the missing numbers. Lots of good conversations took place while they were hard at work because many noticed patterns that occurred within their number grids!
After the most phenomenal Publishing Party last week, the writers of Room #7 were so proud. Every cherub worked extra hard to publish two wonderful three-page stories. They included important details (who, what, and where) as well as how they felt in their stories. With all of these awesome details, the readers truly felt as if they were there in the story. Moreover, the Kindergartners were careful to use lowercase letters when needed, punctuation, and space, and they even stretched out those super tricky words! Lastly, many of our super stars noticed the blends we have been discussing in Reader’s Workshop! Fantastic connections! Our third grade book buddies left some great compliments for our young writers, and the smiles never left their faces!
This week, we are embarking on a short writing project where the boys and girls will write about 100 things they wish they could have as well as 100 things they do NOT want! Additionally, the kiddos need to explain their reasoning. This is an excellent introduction to our opinion and persuasive writing unit coming up after break! Stay tuned!
Lastly, Room #7 was beyond excited and proud for their 100th Day Parade. They totally rocked it and had so much fun. Between their awesome 100th Day costumes (Crowns! Vests! Noodle Necklaces!), celebratory song, and smiling faces, this is definitely a 100th Day for the books! Thank you to all who were able to come and thank you for your endless support at home!
Happy vacation!
