Students met the goal on our earnings jar again! We will celebrate on Friday, December 20th with an afternoon movie and popcorn/crunchy snack they bring in. Mrs. Manfra will teach that day as I will be out for a family commitment in PA. I wish you all a wonderful vacation and holiday season.
Alphafriends: X,W
Writing book: L,W
Circle word: "you"
Reader's Workshop:
We continue to build stamina in our quiet reading. Students read quietly for 15 min this week! So exciting. They continue to use their "super powers" as they read (pointer power, re-read power, persistence power, picture power, stretching word sound power and partner power.) They are quite the reading super heroes.! They have learned they can use several of these powers at the same time to help when they get stuck on a word. Some students even read their books to the class.
Word work/writing:
Students practiced writing circle words, recognizing them in their readings, around the classroom and using them in their writing. We are practicing our letter sounds as a group by playing some games as well.
We also finished our "show and tell" books about a special place.
Art in class: Students created a self-portrait using colored pencils. They are beautiful!
Math Stations:
Practiced nearby teen numbers again.
Played Pop-Down as a group
Build a city- students roll the dice, count the number of cubes, and build a city with vertical towers of different sizes. When finished, they roll the dice to take away the number of cubes until the city is dismantled.
Train Game- similar to build a city, except students build a horizontal train of 20 cubes, then take it apart by rolling the dice.
Counting cards: students are given 5 cards with different settings (farm, cave, tree, ocean, etc) they are given 5 dot cards with teen numbers, one card for each setting. They then count out the correct amount of cubes while using their imagination to create a character or object to put in the setting. For example: 15 apples in a tree, 17 dolphins in the ocean, 12 horses in a corral).
Tangrams: students filled in animal cards with tangram shapes.
IPAD: Park Math working with less and more
Sort by color: students were given bags of objects to sort by color, count and record.
Counting Collections: Ms. Desantis came in to introduce "Counting Collections." Students were given bags of objects to wonder about, make observations and comment on them.
They then worked with a partner to estimate how many are in the bag. Afterwards, they counted the actual number, recorded it and drew a picture of how they counted.
Motion Emotions: Ms. Freeman came in for some stretching and dancing. She then read a story, Finn throws a fit. They discussed feelings and reactions we all have.
Superflex: Mrs. Coker came in to share more about the zones of regulation that correspond with our feelings (red, green, yellow and blue). We then introduced a new chart students will use as a part of their sign in to show their zone. This is a very effective tool as it helps them express their feelings and helps teachers know if someone may need a little extra help throughout the day. Students are also free to change their zones as their feelings change.
Book Buddies: we visited Mrs. Pelkey's 3rd grade classroom Friday. Our book buddies shared their opinion writing and a non-fiction book. Afterwards, we reviewed what our friends in room 7 learned. They were able to share many fun facts and were excited about this new experience.
